My Two Uncles

The Book:  My Two Uncles

The Gist:  A child's honest love for her uncle and his partner.

Why It's Creepy:  This book has genuine value, although maybe a little two deep for children.  On Amazon, one of the reviewers writes:

I'd heard stories about my two uncles and their strange lifestyle, but beyond a few ludicrous stories (one of which involved a gerbil and some PVC piping), I knew very little about them. 
The four years I spent with my Uncle Geoffrey and Uncle Matthew turned out to be a magical time of understanding and acceptance. While they were no substitute for a real father, they were able to teach me that there was nothing wrong with the way I was choosing to lead my life. 
After years of not speaking to my mother, I decided to send her a copy of Judith Vigna's "My Two Uncles." The book does a good job of explaining that homosexuality is love between two adults of the same sex, and that it's not unlike so called "traditional" marriage. 
Three weeks after I sent the book I received a terse letter from my mother that read, "Thanks for the book, queer. Maybe I'll read it. Maybe I won't."

Daddy's Roomate

 The Book:  Daddy's Roommate

The Gist:  Hint:  daddy's roommate is more than friends and likes to wear short shorts.

Why It's Creepy:  Mommy and daddy get a divorce, and daddy's new roommate is a gentlemen by the name of Frank.  The book puts a positive spin on same sex relationships by showing daddy and Frank doing very matter-of-fact things like shaving, eating, sleeping, and even fighting.  While this is all fine and good, the target age group is 2-5 years old.  Can you imagine explaining the concept of homosexuality to a 2 year old child? They barely understand the concept of sharing, let alone love, divorce, and relationships.

Does God Love Michael's Two Daddies?

The Book:  Does God Love Michael's Two Daddies?

The Gist:  A book promoting God's love for all individuals.  Even the gay people.

Why It's Creepy:  
According to Bible.org, and very unfortunately, here's what God really thinks about Michael's two daddies:

"Homosexuality is an illicit lust forbidden by God. He said to His people Israel, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Leviticus 18:22). "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them" (Leviticus 20:13). In these passages homosexuality is condemned as a prime example of sin, a sexual perversion. The Christian can neither alter God's viewpoint nor depart from it. 

In the Bible sodomy is a synonym for homosexuality. God spoke plainly on the matter when He said, "There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel" (Deuteronomy 23:17). The whore and the sodomite are in the same category. A sodomite was not an inhabitant of Sodom nor a descendant of an inhabitant of Sodom, but a man who had given himself to homosexuality, the perverted and unnatural vice for which Sodom was known. Let us look at the passages in question:

But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house around, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. (Genesis 19:4-8)

The Hebrew word for "know" in verse 5 is yada`, a sexual term. It is used frequently to denote sexual intercourse (Genesis 4:1, 17, 25; Matthew 1:24, 25). The message in the context of Genesis 19 is clear. Lot pled with the men to "do not so wickedly." Homosexuality is wickedness and must be recognized as such else there is no hope for the homosexual who is asking for help to be extricated from his perverted way of life."

Ouch. 

Alfie's Home is a scary, scary place.

The Book:  Alfie's Home

The Gist:  A child's book about an abusive household.

Why It's Creepy:  This book will instill fear into any kid who has an uncle Pete.  The story follows Alfie, a young boy, who has a pretty terrible life.  His parent's fight all the time.  His dad doesn't pay enough attention to him and he feels neglected.  His Uncle Pete molests him.  He gets teased in school because people think he is gay.  Poor Alfie has it pretty bad. 


I can't imagine reading this book to a any child, any time.  I can't think of a time and place where it would be appropriate.  Do you really think another "Alfie" would feel better after reading this?  What about the non "Alfies"?

Why It's Creepy:  The author probably meant “gay” as in “happy”… but what’s with the goat, and the farmer looking on in the background with his hand in his pocket?  Just.  Plain.  Creepy.
